Crossroads Church Blog Thingy

Truth that transforms... or at least makes you think...

Welcome to the Crossroads Church blog.  I started this blog as I'm reading through the Bible and wanted a forum to discuss topics/passages that struck my interest or may have intrigued others.

I've also added categories for leadership and general church stuff.

If you are new to blogs, you don't have to leave your name for others to see.  You have to leave an email for the blogmaster, but a pseudonym is cool for others to see.  Don't worry about making mistakes!  Be creative, jump in. respond to an entry or email me to suggest a new topic.

peace,

Drifting - What Really Matters

My friend John Diniz, just started a new book study on Wednesday mornings on the book "It All Goes Back In The Box" by John Ortberg.  One of the more salient points to me this morning was there are many things that are temporary in life and only a few that are eternal.

It made me ponder how much time I was spending on the temporary versus the eternal.  I've found that unless I intentionally focus on spending time on those things that are eternal, my natural drift is toward the temporary.  Time spent with others, who are also pursuing the eternal, was time well spent.

Boy, do I have that problem!!! It is amazing how many times I get bogged down in things that at the time seemed eternal yet in reality are temporary.

It is really amazing how a particular topic can push your buttons and cloud your life. And in the end the topic wasn't worth it.

Recently I had forgotten that my goal in life was to walk a Christian walk with my favorite companion, God. When I am doing that, I really have fun in all aspects of my life whether it is work or family or friends. It does not mean that everything works out fine for me but even if the midst of sorrow joy is there. I often imagine what people thought of when they saw me and my wife and kids laughing as we viewed the casket at my father’s funeral. The joy the eternal brings is so good.

Thanks to those of you who have talked to me about things in the past. I really cherish those times at lunch. I am one that often needs to verbalize things to see them. . I know what a pain I can be. At lunch yesterday I was helped by a very special person that I hope to be able to call a friend someday. If anyone else would like to have lunch, let me know. I promise to enjoy the eternal with you and not wallow in the temporary.

Well as they use to say stick a fork in it, I’m done. God just reminded me that He does not need anyone to do His work. His Church will survive. We are not the bastions of the Church. He has promised that the Church will survive. Therefore I promised Him that I will (with His Strength) not to try to “save the Church”. You know, with God in charge I’ll bet the Church could survive even women preachers.

God and I want to wish you a wonderful day.

By the way does anyone have a fishing hole with bream in it? After Mike talked about fishing the other day, God asked if my daughter and I would go fishing with him.

One of my favorite writers C.S.states actions not eternal are eternally useless. Taking my inventory for today- realizing all good and perfect things come from God-
God has made it a very good day.

I once heard a sermon based on a similar topic that said “relationships” are one of the only things you can take with you when you go … ie: the relationships we build (or destroy) while here on earth – are eternal in nature – vs. things like money which of course has been said “you cant take it with you”. I think the scripture referenced was the poor man named Lazarus standing with Abraham looking down at the rich man – the rich man referred to his family a couple of times and how he wanted Abraham to go tell these folks about God and heaven and salvation.

The point being: Love God and Love others. These two things are truly eternal.

… Reb, yes, I would enjoy a healthy conversation over a greasy hamburger some time to discuss this further …

      Great thoughts all -

This is my 2nd time reading this book and it is even better this time when I'm able to discuss it with the group on Wednesday mornings.

I would invite anyone to join us at the Bistro this Wednesday at 6:30am. It's an easy read and we've only met once .

      Thanks,
      JD

Bream are just the most easy to find, fun catching, quick cleaning, best eating fish ever for everyone from 2 to 92.

This fish is God's gift to fishing. Just look into any kid's eye as they catch one for the first time or the eye of a veteran fisherman (or woman) who has gotten into a mess of them. Talk about eternal!!

The bream (bluegill) is also the state fish of Illinois.
